A moment with our Director Patrik Johansson "As always very many things are happening in the world of batteries, but right now we might actually be at several tipping points: The next MFF of EU, FP10, is being formed as we speak - and how will battery R&D&I be supported 2028-2034?; The made in/with Europe batteries - where are we truly going with this?; The solid-state batteries - are they arriving full front this year (or will we have to wait another year)?; and not the least, the big Q: What happens after the Summer? The first three I cannot answer better than you all, but the latter has an answer ready: Battery2030+ does end - another reason to attend the very last Annual Conference in May in Turin - but the strong community we have built will have another harbor by then and you will all see how we "bridge" this transfer the best way imaginable (hopefully). It is imperative that we also in the future have a way and act to align our common European efforts on battery R&D&I and that this allows us to cover the full battery value-chain, for all battery chemistries and technologies and for all applications - to in the best way support the electrified society of the future. This may perhaps sound pompous and as if small ideas do not count, only large-scale efforts, but in fact it is quite the opposite; by being large and agnostic we create the space and the opportunity to also go beyond the well-trodden paths - to truly invent the batteries of the future. The EU is entering a new era of battery transparency.
From 2027, all EV and industrial batteries above 2 kWh placed on the EU market must carry a Digital Battery Passport including a verified carbon‑footprint declaration. This new framework marks a shift from a waste‑focused directive to a full life‑cycle approach—bringing stricter requirements, deeper supply‑chain insight, and a strong push for sustainability across the entire battery value chain. | | | | | Let us introduce our new project Stellar
STELLAR (Safe, sustainable and high-throughput production of reliable lithium-metal anodes for Gen 4b/4c/5 batteries) tackles one of Europe’s toughest bottlenecks on the road to next-generation solid-state and lithium-metal batteries: making ultrathin lithium-metal (LiM) foils reliably, at scale, and with minimal waste. Instead of slow batch processing, STELLAR is developing a continuous roll-to-roll vacuum deposition process: a metal foil moves through a vacuum chamber while lithium is deposited as a thin layer, and a protective coating is added immediately afterwards in the same chamber, without exposing the lithium to air, so the highly reactive surface remains stable. The pilot line, started from an existing roll-to-roll coater and upgraded for industrial operation, will add “eyes and brains” to production: non-destructive inline sensing to track thickness and roughness in real time, precision laser cutting, and automated quality control that uses data science and machine learning to spot defects early and tighten process windows. A data-driven digital twin will link measurements to fast optimisation, while a circular-economy strategy aims to maximise scrap recovery and recycling at end-of-life. Innovation uptake is essential to elevate research outcomes to the next stage. But how can we effectively bridge the gap between the laboratory and the market? At the Annual Conference 2026, Battery 2030+ invites early-career researchers to take part in an extended, interactive workshop designed to transform scientific findings into compelling industry narratives. This session aims to empower scientists to communicate clearly with non-expert audiences, facilitate knowledge transfer through engaging storytelling, and tailor their messages to targeted industrial stakeholders. Guided by experienced mentors from VDI/VDE-IT and Fraunhofer ISC, participants will join a practical, hands-on training featuring real-world pitching exercises. They will develop and refine presentations of their research results aimed at industry partners, explore targeted communication strategies, and receive constructive expert feedback.A selected group of young researchers will further enhance their pitches, culminating in a plenary session where they will present to a jury and gain valuable insights to strengthen their approach. The best scientific talks will be awarded.
